My Fashion Pet Peeves

Do you ever find yourself people watching or out and about somewhere, and see someone wearing something so awful you just hardcore cringe into eternity? Because that’s me a lot of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people expressing themselves in whatever way they want, but that being said there’s still some things that I really can’t stand when it comes to peoples’ styles or outfits sometimes. Hopefully this post doesn’t turn into an intense roast session, but hey, sometimes I just gotta complain for awhile.

Shoes That Ruin an Outfit

This one really bothers me. Sometimes I’ll see someone wearing a great outfit, but then they’re wearing a pair of shoes that don’t go with the rest of the outfit the slightest bit (or I guess aren’t at the same level of formality) and ruin the whole look. A lot of times these end up being random athletic shoes that just confuse me when put with the rest of the outfit. Not to call out one of my roommates (yikes) but once she was wearing a super nice floral shirt and some jeans, but then paired it with a gross pair of black and pink Nikes which just made me die a little inside. SO CLOSE but just missed the mark. Shoes make or break outfits for me so it just makes me sad when people have so much potential but just don’t know how to style shoes.

Bootcut Jeans

I’ve always hated them and probably always will. There are very few occasions where I’ve seen bootcut jeans actually pulled off nicely without them looking kinda trashy. Most of the people wearing them that I see are yee yee folks with the bedazzled pockets and with their yeehawing cowboy boots and flannels, which doesn’t really help the cause. Maybe my mind would change if I saw someone wearing them in an actual classy way, but for now I’m still a hater because they just ain’t flattering.

Yee yee brother time to go harvest some corn

Crossbody Fanny Packs

These just look so stupid. Any time I see someone wearing a fanny pack like a crossbody, it just looks like they’re trying way to hard to look cool. Sure, I don’t mind an occasional fanny pack moment once in awhile (if it’s worn the regular way) because I see the appeal in wearing them for actual practical reasons to hold things in. It also just looks uncomfortable and doesn’t deserve to be the focal point of an outfit if it’s right over someone’s chest. Just carry a bag instead.

Pls no

Bermuda Shorts

They’re totally fine on guys, but for ladies I just don’t like how they look. Apparently denim bermuda jorts are coming back into style and I’m not happy about it. They just remind me of something a dad or grandma would wear at some point in their lives so it’s a no go for me. Plus for the summer I feel like they would make you really warm and sweaty which isn’t fun. They’re kinda similar to the whole biker shorts trend too which I also think looks pretty stupid just like these.

Overly Trendy Outfits aka People Who Try Too Hard

Outfits that are overly styled or trendy makes it look like someone is trying way to hard to look cool or in style. I can relate to wanting to wear pieces that are becoming popular or that I think are interesting, but only to an extent. If I see someone wearing those tiny sunglasses, the dumb crossbody fanny pack (see above), chunky athletic shoes, and biker shorts, I can’t take them seriously. Girl ya don’t need to look that jazzy because ya just look dumb! People need to pick and choose which trendy items they want to wear and not wear literally every single thing they think is “in” at the same time.

Basically like this but worse

So that’s the end of my mini rant. Thanks for tuning in.

My Top Movie Picks!

What better way to spend a weekend than watching way too many movies! I’ve watched a lot of movies in my 19 years of life, and there has been a few that have stuck out to me that I consider some of my favorites. This list is very varied, and some of these I can’t really even explain why I like them so much but they’re still great. Most of these are probably pretty familiar names, but I thought I would share what some of these picks are in case you are in need of some recommendations, plus I have no inspiration about what else to post about right now! Heck yeah! So in no particular order….

Now You See Me

Sick trick dude

So this movie is just cool as heck. Maybe I like it so much because it’s about magic and that’s always been something I’ve been interested in, but either way it’s still a quality movie. Cool card tricks? Check. People trying to steal money? Check. Dave Franco looking hot? Check. What else does one need? There’s also a second movie, but its definitely not as good as the first one.

16 Candles

Same girl

16 Candles is honestly just really cute. I love me some 80’s movies, and this is a pretty great one. It’s your typical coming-of-age teen movie with lots of memorable characters and funny moments. A classic! Some 80’s runner ups for the list are Karate Kid, Stand By Me, and The Outsiders if you want some other great options!

Baby Driver

Get wrecked

I really like this movie because it’s different from many other movies I’ve seen before. The plot kept me interested the whole time and it’s definitely one of those movies you need to watch more than once. I’m normally not a fan of action-type movies but this one I enjoyed a lot! It’s unique because of the way it was filmed, and the soundtrack fits perfectly with each shot. Super cool!

Coco

Yee yee hermano

As someone who is currently studying Spanish and has been for many years, this movie had a ton of appeal to me. When I watched it for the first time I was super excited! It’s a super cute take on Day of the Dead in Mexico, which is really interesting to study and learn about the various elements of the celebration. Me gusta mucho y pienso que es una de las mejores películas más nuevas de Disney!

The Big Lebowski

Iconic

This one’s just kinda a mess, but an entertaining mess. It’s become a cult classic and it’s full of iconic lines and crazy scenes that make it great. I didn’t expect to really like this movie when I first heard of it, but when I watched it I was pleasantly surprised and thought it was great (my parents didn’t really agree). It’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s still worth the watch! The dude abides.

Hugo

rip

Hugo was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I found the story line so interesting and it has always stayed on my list of favorites ever since I first saw it. It takes place during the 1930’s in Paris, and it’s just a really beautifully made movie that is visually stunning and is super interesting to watch! It also won a few Oscars and various other awards!

Hope you were able to find a few new movies to check out and happy watching!

Spring Fashion Favorites!

Oh man. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted! School has been keeping me crazy busy this last month but at least it’s almost summer! That being said, since the weather is finally (kind of) getting nicer, I wanted to share a few of my favorite pieces that I think are spring fashion essentials and some of my favorites. Some of these items can probably also be considered summer pieces but since it is technically spring that’s what I’m going to call it. Let’s get crackin’ shall we?

Flowy Pants

This one is a bit general, but when the weather is in a transitional period between kind of cold and kind of warm, sometimes you don’t want to fully commit to shorts but also don’t want to wear full on pants. This is a great option! I have a pair of black capris that are super flowy and have a tropical pattern on them and I love wearing them during the spring. Super comfy and easy to style!

Denim Jacket

I’ve been at a weird point where I don’t want to wear my winter jacket anymore but it’s too cold to go without a coat, so I’ll often default to a denim jacket. It looks good with pretty much anything, and it can be layered with dresses, skirts, and just about every piece of clothing I own. They are warm enough but aren’t too heavy to the point where I get too overheated.

Rompers

The classic. Rompers are perfect for spring, especially those with fun, colorful patterns. I have both long sleeve and sleeveless rompers so they can easily transition from season to season. Jackets and cardigans are perfect for layering when its a bit chilly out yet, and they can easily be dressed up or down depending on how you accessorize.

Fun Earrings!

I’ve recently become an earring aficionado, and I love finding new pairs that I can wear with a variety of different outfits. Statement earrings are a great option for the spring because they can take a simple outfit to the next level. They may seem a bit intimidating at first, but I promise that after you wear a pair once you’ll be hooked. I really like my pair of multicolored tassel earrings that are super fun! (Pro tip: Walmart has a pretty good and cheap selection)

Neutral Sandals

Spring is the perfect time to pull out the sandals, and it’s always great to have a pair in a neutral color that match with everything. Sandals are so easy to just throw on with almost every outfit! Black and brown pairs are great options that work really well.

Florals and Bright Colors!

Its about time to start moving away from the dark and dreary colors of the winter to brighter and fun patterns for the spring time! Florals, stripes, and bright colors make it seem like its finally getting closer to summer (even if it’s 40 degrees out like it is when I’m writing this).

Happy spring ya’ll!

Unpopular Opinion: Why I Don’t Hate The Kardashians

The Kardashian klan. Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendall, Kylie, and don’t forget about Rob. They have karved out our kulture over the last few years, their krazy lives kapivating entertainment news today. Hated by many, but not by me. Why? I’m here to explain why many hate the Kardashians, and why I am invested in their wild and dramatic lives.

The main argument that I hear against the Kardashians is that they don’t have any talent so therefore they have no reason to be famous. I don’t necessarily think this is true. While they did gain notoriety as a result of Kim’s sex tape with Ray J, they didn’t automatically become a household name and become rich.

For those that argue that the Kardashians aren’t deserving of their success and “are famous for nothing” is where I see fault. I can agree with the fact that they did earn a lot of their wealth from KUWTK, but there’s a lot more on the table than just this. Each family member has contributed to their own wealth, becoming successful businesswomen in the process. Kim has founded KKW Beauty, has her own game on the App Store, and even has her own Kimojis (Update: and now is studying to become a lawyer!). Kylie has Kylie Cosmetics and is the youngest billionaire. Kendall is one of the world’s highest paying models. Khloe is the founder of the clothing company Good American. Kourtney helped produced some of KUWTK and earns millions from brand endorsements, and now has her own company Poosh. And of course, Kris is the best momager of all time.

Running a variety of businesses that make millions of dollars isn’t easy, and while they have help, there’s no arguing that it takes some degree of talent to become, and stay, an entrepreneur of their level.

I can see why people choose not to care about their lives since they are very different in comparison to the average American person, but that doesn’t mean its not entertaining to keep up on what is going on in their lives. Sure, while I can’t really relate to being a billionaire, I enjoy following what they’re going to do next. Who is going to break up with who? Who is going to get married (and then divorced)? Who is going to start a new business? Or a new clothing line? Or a new cosmetics line? Who is going to get the next call from Todd Kraines? (my fav KUWTK moment).

Can I name all of Kris Jenner’s grandchildren? Yes. Can I list all of the Kardashians in birth order? Yes. I would dominate in Kardashian trivia.

You can hate on the Kardashians all you want, but there’s no denying that they have influence. Bible.

Oscars Red Carpet Fashion Review!

Anddddd we’re back with another awards show post! I promise this will be the last one for a while, but it’s the only relevant thing that I can think to post about.

The Oscars were this past weekend and wowza it was good! It’s so hard to pick out my favorite looks from this year’s red carpet but I’ve managed to find a few of my top picks that are listed below!

Regina King

Although this was a fairly simple Oscar de la Renta dress, I think she pulled it off very nicely. The high slit worked really well for her and the longer train was a nice touch.

Jennifer Lopez

JLo always comes through with the red carpet looks. This year was no different with her Tom Ford silver gown. The mirrored mosaic is so cool, and she’s probably one of the few people that can pull something like this off.

Jennifer Hudson

The Jennifers were serving looks tonight!!! Red is such a good color on her and the ruffles are a great way to elevate the dress.

Constance Wu

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is constance.jpg

This. color. Yellow isn’t easy to pull off, but Constance did it perfectly. The dress is simple enough, yet it still has the flowy skirt and sleeves to make it more interesting. Yessssss!!!

Now for a few of my not-so-favorites that made me say yikes!

Maya Rudolph

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is maya.jpg

Okay. So my deal with this one is that there’s just too much darn fabric. She has a whole dress and a cape thingy too which she definitely didn’t need. I think I would have been okay with it if she kept the pattern but just got rid of basically half of it. Not a fan.

Serena Williams

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is serena.jpg

Don’t get me wrong I love Serena, but this dress was kinda just weird. The black part of it was nice just the red triangle thing on top didn’t seem like it really was supposed to be part of the dress. It left me kind of confused and I think she could have done a lot better.

Kacey Musgraves

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is kacey.jpg

First off, I was slightly confused as to why she was even at the Oscars and why they had her present even though she has no connection to movies (that I know of). Anyways, this dress was too over the top with the tulle and it just didn’t work. Not sure why she chose to go in this direction when she could have easily pulled off a classier look.

Sarah Paulson

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is sarah.jpg

This had the potential to be great, but the top ruined it for me. The skirt is so nice, and the color is so nice, but the side slits and the confusing, cinched shirt thing made no sense.

Welllllll that’s basically about it for my picks for this year’s red carpet! I had a few others that I really liked and disliked but there’s only so many I can list. Until next year!

My Grammys Reaction: Best and Worst!

Sunday night I spent almost 4 hours of my life watching one of my favorite award shows, the Grammys. Overall I thought it was pretty good, but of course, I had my favorite moments and others I didn’t like so much. Here are a few of my personal favorite and not-so-favorite moments from the evening!

Favs

  1. Alicia Keys’ Performance With The Two Pianos

This was one of my favorite performances of the night. She is SO TALENTED! The medley of the different songs was really well done and proves that she is deserving of all of the 15 Grammys she’s won. And come on, playing two pianos at once? Crazy.

2. Cardi B Winning Rap Album of the Year

I was so happy when Cardi won Best Rap Album. She was so deserving because she had such a great year and a great album. The fact that she was the first woman to win in this category too is so cool. She had such a good night, starting with her iconic red carpet look and her Money performance!

3. Lady Gaga’s Shallow Performance

I was not expecting this one at all, but Gaga’s performance of Shallow was kinda wild. I thought she was going to do a slow, emotional rendition of the song but instead she did almost the opposite. Plus her entire rhinestone/bedazzled outfit was pretty sick. She sounded so good and it definitely stood out for me.

4. Michelle Obama’s Appearance

When Michelle came out with the rest of the ladies I was so excited. Five of the most legendary women together on stage? Heck yeah.

Not-So-Favs

  1. Drake Getting Cut Off

Drake was in the middle of talking about why winning a Grammy doesn’t really matter, and then he got cut off before being able to finish his point. I wanted to see how he was going to end what he was saying, but I guess the producers thought he was going to say something questionable so they cut the mic 😦

2. Post Malone/Red Hot Chili Peppers

I thought this whole performance was kinda weird and overall left me slightly confused. I liked when Post was singing by himself at the start, but when the RHCP came out they had almost too much energy that it was somewhat stressful to even watch. It had the potential to be great, but the execution didn’t work.

3. Rhonda Ross Talking On The Phone

This was also a weird moment for me. As much as I love that this became a meme, I don’t think it was that great for her to be on the phone during whatever performance/presentation was going on. I mean come on, she could have just texted instead but she really had to have a full on conversation during the Grammys. Oh well.

4. Katy Perry’s Dress

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Chelsea Lauren/REX/Shutterstock (10095020kn) Katy Perry 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 10 Feb 2019

I really disliked this dress. As much as I like Katy, she looked like a cupcake but not in a good way. If the skit was less puffed and more A-line or drop I would have been a fan.

A Few Honorable Mentions

Best: Diana Ross’ inspirational pep talk/performance, Alessia Cara’s dress, Dolly Parton
Worst: Kylie Jenner’s outfit, many artists not showing up

Sooooo did my fashion predictions from my previous post come true? Let’s see!

In my Globes post, I thought Cardi would wear something bold and unique. I was so right! People were hating on this look but honestly I think it’s iconic.

I also thought Gaga would keep it classier and not go too dramatic, and I guess I would say I wasn’t necessarily wrong or right. For her, this might be considered one of her more tame looks but at the same time it has the drama too.

My other two predictions were for Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar, neither of which showed up. Darn.

Peace out Grammys, next stop, the Oscars!

How to Look Put Together In College (Or Anywhere) With Minimal Effort

So I’m a freshman in college. As someone who likes styling outfits and someone who in general cares about how I present myself to others, I often cringe at what I see my peers wearing around campus. I totally understand that people want to be comfortable if they’re going to be in class all day, but there are ways to still be comfortable without wearing sweatpants, leggings, and Crocs every day! It’s the simple things that can make or break an outfit, and you don’t have to sacrifice comfort in order to still look nice. After all, making a good impression on whoever you may meet throughout the day can be important! Always remember:

lol @ this meme

That being said, here are some of my tips on how to still look decent when you don’t want to put in any effort into dressing in anything other than sweats.

  1. Pick out your clothes the night before!

This one isn’t really that difficult. If one of the main reasons you always end up wearing sweatshirts and sweatpants every day is because you say you don’t have time to pick out something nice, try this! Then you don’t have to get up super early the next day because you still need to figure out your outfit. Make sure you look at the weather forecast as well so you can plan what you’re wearing based around that.

2. Accessorize!

For me, accessories can elevate an outfit so much without even putting in a lot of effort. If you feel like wearing something a bit more plain like a white t-shirt, try adding a necklace or choker or even a scarf! I’m a big fan of rings and earrings and I find that they can make even the simplest outfit look more put together. It adds something extra that takes your look up a notch without being too flashy or seem like too much.

3. Find versatile pieces you like!

If all you want to do is be comfy since you’re going to be sitting in class all day, I get it. But, if you add certain elements to your wardrobe that are both comfortable and cute, then it’s a win-win. For me, I live in cardigans during Wisconsin winters. They’re so cozy yet still look nice if paired with the right items. Find a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. Some super stretchy skinny jeans, a v-neck t-shirt, or a fuzzy sweater are a few examples that can be paired with a variety of items to create a plethora of different outfits.

4. Mix up your favorite elements!

This one is a little bit harder to word. If you wake up super early and think “gee, I already know that today I’m going to wear leggings because I’m not feeling the whole actual pants/effort thing”, then this one’s for you. You don’t need to sacrifice your favorite comfortable items in order to look put together, you just need to find a different way to style them! For example, if you want to wear your best pair of leggings, don’t automatically reach for your favorite sweatshirt and call it good. Try an over-sized sweater or cardigan, or maybe a cute denim jacket instead. You still get the comfort of your leggings but adding a nicer top to elevate the look.

5. Wear what makes you feel confident!

At the end of the day, wear whatever makes you feel best. If you feel like your outfit is bomb today, then good for you! Whatever you end up wearing, if you feel great in it that’s all that matters. After all, confidence is the best accessory and if you look good you feel good!

Try to get on Shaq’s level

My (Very Late But Still Relevant) Favorite Red Carpet Looks from the Golden Globes (Plus Predictions!)

I LIVE for awards season and yes, the Golden Globes definitely were multiple weeks ago, but hey, why not still share my favorite ~ lewks ~ and un-expert opinions from the red carpet. Nothing reminds me more of how much of a broke college student I am than looking at these poppin’ custom dresses, but a girl can dream!

Me after seeing how good everyone looked while I sat alone in my dorm room in pajamas

It is so hard to compile a good list of my favorites because they all looked so good so this is what I have put together in no particular order.

  1. Lupita Nyong’o

Okay, I’m convinced this woman is flawless. She always kills the red carpets and she really turned heads with this Calvin Klein look. Wakanda is quaking.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock (10048067lk) Lupita Nyong’o 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 06 Jan 2019

2. Lady Gaga

We all saw this one coming. Obviously Gaga did not come to play with her blue Valentino ensemble. I mean really? The sleeves? The hair? The train? A true icon.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Rob Latour/Shutterstock (10048066js) Lady Gaga 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 06 Jan 2019

3. Julia Roberts

I really wasn’t expecting to like this Stella McCartney pants/dress fusion going on, but Julia pulls it off. It’s classy enough to work for the red carpet even though it’s not a full-on gown and it was a unique choice that made her stand out.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by David Fisher/Shutterstock (10048065ek) Julia Roberts 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 06 Jan 2019

4. Emily Blunt

Let’s keep this blunt and agree that this dress is so cool. The embroidery and detail on the silver lace from Alexander McQueen make it one of my favorites of the night.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by David Fisher/Shutterstock (10048065dy) Emily Blunt 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 06 Jan 2019

5. Charlize Theron

Charlize’s black and white Dior dress was killer and she always shows up looking chic as heck to red carpets. I’m thoroughly convinced she can pull off anything she wants to *cues her J’adore commercial that is on every day*

Mandatory Credit: Photo by David Fisher/Shutterstock (10048065ez) Charlize Theron 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 06 Jan 2019

6. Halle Berry

Halle looks stunning in this color! Burgundy is my favorite color so maybe that’s why I liked her Zuhair Muraid gown as much as I did. She’s one of the few people that can pull off a dress with a high slit and low neckline like that, and the partly sheer element to the dress is also a cool touch. Love the earrings too!

Obviously there are many other looks that were incredible, so a few honorable mentions go to Janelle Monet, Saoirse Ronan, and Laura Harrier.

And just for funsies, I’m going to call out Amy Adams to step up her red carpet game. Her look was so plain and could have easily been improved with some killer accessories. Don’t get me wrong I love Amy, she just didn’t do it for me this year.

Me trying to figure out why Amy chose to wear this dress while also pretending I like it

We all know that coming up next is the Grammys and I’m SO PUMPED. The Grammys is one of my favorite award shows just because I find it the most entertaining with all of the cool performances and people in attendance. I’m looking forward to seeing the red carpet because usually people are more open to wearing unique looks that might push the boundaries a bit more than some of the other shows like the Globes or the Oscars.

There are many people I’m looking forward to seeing on the Grammy carpet this year! Here are a few.

  1. Cardi B: She’s had a HUGE year and is going to be performing so I think she’s going to come wearing something bold and unique just like her personality.
  2. Lady Gaga: All eyes are on Gaga as of recently and everyone always is looking forward to seeing what she is going to wear because her outfits are so iconic. I think she might keep it extra classy this year and not go full-on dramatic but I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
  3. Kendrick Lamar: He’s nominated for the most awards of the evening so I think he’s going to go either go all out with a more sophisticated look or a something a bit bolder since he’ll be getting a lot of attention throughout the night.
  4. Rihanna: RiRi always slays the fashion game, no matter what she’s wearing. I can expect her to not disappoint this year and have heads turning in maybe something a little more risque or sexy.

Well there you have it folks! There are my two cents on the looks from the Golden Globes even if they were quite some time ago and people probably stopped caring about them. I can’t wait to see what the Grammys brings us on February 10!

Hello!

Hello!

I’m Natalie, a 19 year old college student studying Communications in Wisconsin. A few days ago my sister told me “you should find a hobby!”, so here I am.

I’m starting this blog to share my passions for pop culture and fashion! I’ve always been interested in the world of celebrities, entertainment and pop culture, so I wanted to start a place where I can share my thoughts and talk without annoying my family and friends (they’ve stopped caring about my constant updates on Kardashian drama). I’ve also come to enjoy fashion and style, so I want to be able to express my love for clothes and outfits in a new and fun way! Blogging is very new to me so let’s see how badly this goes!

As the wise Cardi B once said, okurrrrrrrr!
